A Practical Approach to Public Speaking - 28 October 2026

About the course

This half-day practical workshop is designed for anyone who wants to become a more confident, compelling speaker. Unlike a traditional public speaking course, there is no theory and no sitting back and listening, every block is built around participation, practice, and doing.

Across four hours, participants work on the physical and vocal skills that shape how they come across before they even speak, discover practical tools for structuring their ideas clearly and handling difficult questions with confidence, and leave with a short, compelling statement about their work that they can use immediately.

The session is deliberately low-pressure and high-energy, designed to feel safe enough to take risks and challenging enough to make a real difference. No prior experience or preparation is required.

What you'll learn

By the end of this course you will learn:

  • How your body and voice communicate before you speak, and how to use that deliberately
  • A simple, reliable structure for answering any question clearly and confidently
  • Practical strategies for handling Q&A, including questions you cannot answer
  • How to prepare your intention before any speaking situation using four key questions
  • How to distil complex ideas into a short, clear, compelling statement of your work

Who the course is for

This half-day course is for anyone working in a clinical research context, at any stage who wants to build speaking confidence, communicate their work more clearly to non-specialist audiences, or develop practical skills for presentations, conferences, funding conversations, and Q&A sessions. Equally valuable for those who have never attended a public speaking session and those who have completed an introductory course and want to go further.

This course is designed for academic, public sector and charity workers and we are offering it at a discounted price for people working in those sectors. It may also be possible to offer places to commercial organisations – please email education@edinburghCRF.ed.ac.uk for further information about availability, applicable booking fees and how to book.
